From Knowledge to Believing to Action: Part 5 – Seeking God

In the previous blogs, I started off by saying that we need knowledge of God and an understanding of this knowledge. We get to know Him better by spending time with Him, and then comes faith by believing the unseen, and growing our roots deep into the living water. The next step is action.

 

Synonyms for action is activity and movement. We briefly touched on movement at the end of the previous blog (faith and trees).

Psalms 1:1-3 (NKJV)

 “Blessed is the man

Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,

Nor stands in the path of sinners,

Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;

2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord,

And in His law he meditates day and night.

3 He shall be like a tree

Planted by the rivers of water,

That brings forth its fruit in its season,

Whose leaf also shall not wither;

And whatever he does shall prosper.”

As mentioned in at the end of the previous blog, the first verse shows regression – walks, stands, sits. This verse is basically saying, do not stagnate and fill your head with worldly things – cautioning not to stop moving. In a previous blog post titled Walk by Faith and not by Sight – the Word also prompts us to walk – move in faith – to take action.

Spending time with God is a decision we make based on the knowledge we have of God, and because we have faith in Him. Spending time with a person is to move towards that person – to take action. You will not get to know someone if you are stagnant and do nothing. You might know of the person, but you do not know them personally. The Word says that Jesus is knocking at the door, waiting for us to open up for Him – to open the door for Him is to take action, moving towards Him. Going back to the example of the doctor again: if he doesn’t take action – act with the knowledge he has and believes in it – will he be a doctor?

Philippians 3:12-16

“Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead,  I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Therefore let us, as many as are mature, have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal even this to you. Nevertheless, to the degree that we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us be of the same mind.”

To ‘press on’, ‘reaching forward’ and ‘press toward’ is to move, to act! We cannot sit around waiting, wanting, expecting. God wants us to move towards Him, to come closer to Him. What is this ‘goal for the prize of the upward call of God’ that is referred to in this scripture? It is to live in the plan that God has for your life. He wants us to thrive! The goal for the prize of the upward call, I suppose, is ultimately to have eternal life. God wants us to ‘be of the same mind’, meaning that we have to renew our minds, and think like Jesus did. Think the thoughts that God thinks of us and of others.

Jesus says in Matthew 6:33 (NKJV):

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

The word ‘seek’ is defined as an attempt to find something. If you search for God, and find God, you are going over into action. He wants us to always and continuously search  for Him (get to know Him), more and more. Basically Jesus says that this is all you have to do – seek God and the rest will be added to you. The more you seek God, His kingdom and His righteousness, the more you will want to seek Him. It is like the Kari Jobe song – The more I seek you.

“The more I seek you,

The more I find you

The more I find you, the more I love you”

The more we get to know God the more we want to get to know Him. We so often want things to fall in our laps, to just happen, but Jesus didn’t say, just sit around, wait, and all these things will be added to you. No, we have to let our knowledge of God, that turned into faith, turn to action – seeking Him more and more. And not because we want ‘all these things’ that will be added to us, but because of who He is. The Holy Spirit in us wants to connect with God through us, He reminds us, urges us and encourages us to always seek God. Let the Spirit work through you! Seek God above all else.

Jeremiah 29:12-14 (NKJV)

“Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. I will be found by you, says the Lord, and I will bring you back from your captivity,”

That is why information about God alone, the knowledge of God alone, is not enough. You can know the Bible word for word, from cover to cover, but if you do not know Him and His love, you will have nothing. We then walk by faith and not by sight. We have to allow our faith to grow into a tree, with a big root system, anchored in the living water of God! We have to allow our faith to bear much fruit and become a big and beautiful tree.  Moving over into action. Seeking Him more, searching for Him, moving towards God!

Hebrews 11:6 (NKJV)

“But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”
