From Knowledge to Believing to Action: Part 6 – Be Still and Know

In the previous blog post we said that going over into action after gaining the knowledge and then believing it, is to move towards God – seeking Him and His Kingdom. This year in our ladies ministry at church the verse that we started the year off with is Psalms 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God;”

When we are talking about action and moving towards God, why do I think this verse is applicable to this subject? To me there are two meanings to the ‘be still’ part of this verse:

  • The more literal part: If you are still and you are quieting the mind you will be able to hear the Lord’s voice more clearly. It will be easier to discern between God’s voice and anyone or anything else. What do I mean by quieting the mind? It means to cut out the worldly thoughts, circumstances and your own thoughts that is not focussed on God. When we are moving towards God and our focus is on him, our minds will be still. This will help to build a stronger and closer relationship with God. When you want to get to know someone and build a relationship, you will never be able to hear the other person if you are constantly talking, or if you are so busy with your own thoughts, while the other person is speaking.
  • Secondly, to ‘be still’ means to surrender, to let go, stop striving. So basically what it is saying is we give ourselves to God, surrendering EVERYTHING to Him, from our thoughts, to our daily coming and going – more of Him and less of me. Giving 100% of me to God.

So to ‘be still’ is giving everything over to God – more of Him and less of me – in order to hear His voice and His plans for me.

The ‘and know that I am God’, to me, means to really know Him – to know His heart, His voice, His will, basically to know Him PERSONALLY. To have a REAL and INTIMATE RELATIONSHIP with Him.

Seek God more and more by surrendering ALL to Him and quieting your mind so that you may hear from Him directly (getting the living water directly from God – it will also help your roots to grow deeper and stronger in Him). So that we may know God personally and intimately.
